Committee to Elect Ira Thomas Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff
New Orleans, LA August 1, 2004 -- Chief Ira Thomas, Executive Administrator of Security and Investigations of New Orleans Public Schools will formally announce his candidacy for Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff Saturday, July 31, 2004 at 2:00 P.M., from his headquarters in the Lake Forest Plaza, 5700 Read Boulevard, Suite 235.
Among his many accomplishments, Chief Thomas ensured the safety of students on school grounds by increasing supervision, accountability, and performance of officers assigned to schools. He returned several patrol officers to street patrols, increased the use of metal detection devices, implemented professional development training for school security officers, created supervisory opportunities for female officers, and initiated community outreach programs.
Chief Thomas is a retired New Orleans Police Lieutenant with 28 years of dedicated service. In his tenure with the police department, he served in Patrol Services as a Platoon Commander, Task Force Commander, Police Education Instructor, and Asset Forfeiture/Taxicab Bureau Investigator. Also, he received many awards, letters of commendation, unit citations, and two medals for "Life Saving."
Chief Thomas served as President of the Black Organization of Police. Under his leadership, he increased membership enrollment from 150 officers to more than 300 within the first six months of taking office. He brought credibility to the organization by addressing working conditions, fair labor practices, and promotional opportunities for police officers. He established dialogue with city, business, and community leaders to further the goals of the organization.
A graduate of Loyola University, Chief Thomas holds a Bachelor of Criminal Justice Degree, and specialized training in Crisis Intervention, Critical Incident Management, Counter-Drug Trafficking, and Anti-Terrorism Training.
